You may not call her the reigning Diva of the hindi film industry today, but the timeless beauty and the million dollar smile of this dhak-dhak girl , even today continues to captivate the hearts of fans all round the globe.

The humble beginnings were in the year 1984 with the film Aabodh . She took up every role that came her way. The girl-next door came from a non-filmy background and faced a couple of years of struggle before she could actually taste success. ‘Tezaab’ in the year 1988 became her first commercial success. She was coined the title of the “ Ek-Do-Teen,” girl. She rose above the likes of Sridevi and Jayaprada to make her mark in the industry . Then came Parinda, Ram- Lakhan ,Beta ,Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! , Raja , Dil To Pagal Hai,  Mrityudand , Pukar and Devdas which everytime showcased a new charismatic dimension to this actor’s persona. The impeccable dancing only added to her gracious aura. Aaja Nachle provided a perfect script for her comeback. It failed to create a lasting impact on the box-office but she won accolades for her dance moves and her fans were overwhelmed to watch her magic on the silver screen again. She proved to the world that she needed only music by her side, and that she can carry any movie all by herself without the conventional hero or the romantic male lead.

She has 5 filmfare awards to name ( out of which 4 are for the best actress category ) and numerous other recognitions. Padmashri is the latest addition to her success story. In the year 2000 , she broke a million hearts to marry Dr. Shriram Nene. The devout mother of two says that acting is not on the cards as of now. She is every director’s choice, the perfect image captured by an ace photographer, a choreographer’s sincere student, a favourite co-actor and a down- to-earth performer. On her birthday today, I wish her health, wealth and splendid success in the years to come…….
